What to bring to your appointment

The fuller the picture, the more focused the assessment and the fewer investigations need repeating.

• Previous endoscopies, with the report and images if available
• Histology reports from biopsies or polypectomies
• Imaging such as CT, MRI or ultrasound, preferably on digital media rather than the report alone
• Recent blood tests
• A complete list of medications with doses. Mention anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents and iron supplements explicitly.

If you have an endoscopy scheduled

For colonoscopy, preparation determines the value of the examination. For gastroscopy, fasting is required for the period you will be given. For any examination under sedation you need someone to accompany you, as driving is not permitted for the rest of the day.

If you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents, or if you have diabetes, please tell us before the appointment. Medication may need adjusting, and that decision is always made by the doctor, never by the patient alone.

When not to wait for an appointment

• Gastrointestinal bleeding, with substantial blood or black stools
• Severe abdominal pain that does not settle
• Fever with rigors and jaundice
• Persistent vomiting with inability to keep fluids down
• Difficulty swallowing that has appeared quickly and is worsening

In these situations please attend an emergency department.
